antioxidant effects of some medicinal plants
Authors
abstract
introduction: unsaturated fatty acids , one of the most important components of biological membranes , are very sensitive to oxidation processes. damage to cells and tissues by oxidation of these kinds of acids is one of the most important contributing factors in many diseases, such as, atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and cancer. there are some available antioxidant synthetic compounds in market, but because of their side effects (toxic effects), they have not been used as antioxidant drug for now. medicinal plants, as the main natural sources of polyphenolic compounds, are interested for their antioxidant effects. the aim of this study is to examine the antioxidant effescts of some medicinal plants (of labiatae family) which are native to iran. materials and methods: the effects of hydroalcoholic extracts of six medicinal plants from labiatae family (salvia officinalis, melissa officinalis, thymus daenensis, dracocephalum kotschyi, lavandula angustifolia and dracocephalum moldavica) on decreasing oxidation of rats’ hepatocytes were investigated. these effects were meseared by formation of mda and leakage value of sgot and ldl. results : this study indicated that, total extracts of salvia officinalis and melissa officinalis (with minimum concentration of 0.01mg/ml) and thymus daenensis and dracocephalum kotschyi (with minimum concentration of 0.05mg/ml) have more and better antioxidant effects. however, no antioxidant effects were seen from total extracts of lavandula angustifolia and dracocephalum moldavica. conclusion: it can be said that total extract of melissa officinalis has the best antioxidant effect among the six species which were investigated.

detection of volatile compounds of medicinal plants with some nano-sorbents using modified or new methodologies and investigation of antioxidant activity of their methanolic extracts
in this work, a novel and fast method for direct analysis of volatile compounds (davc) of medicinal plants has been developed by holding a filament from different parts of a plant in the gc injection port. the extraction and analysis of volatile components of a small amount of plant were carried out in one-step without any sample preparation. after optimization of temperature, extraction time a...
ANTISPASMODIC EFFECTS OF SOME IRANIAN MEDICINAL PLANTS
Alcoholic and water extracts of many medicinal plants are commonly used in German folk medicine and other countries as antispasmodics. However, so far no data on dose relationships or comparisons of the antispasmodic effects with reference substances have been available for most of these plant extracts. Using acetylcholine as the stimulating agent, the antispasmodic effect of preparations ...

One of the most reactive and dangerous agents for the living cells is reactive oxygen free radical species (ROS). When there is an imbalance between ROS generating and scavenging systems (oxidative stress), tissue damages will appear in human body such as degenerative disorders of CNS like Alzheimer's disease. Recently, a high interest in medicinal plants containing antioxidants has been increa...

Cellular damage or oxidative injury arising from free radicals or reactive oxygen species (ROS) now appears the fundamental mechanism underlying a number of human neurodegenerative disorder, diabetes, inflammation, viral infections, autoimmune pathologies and digestive system disorders. Free radicals are generated through normal metabolism of drugs, environmental chemicals and other xenobiotics...
